A bomb explosion occurred in a campus gym at Mindana State University, Philippines, while mass was in progress. Group ISIS claimed to be the mastermind behind the bombing that killed four people.
ISIS’s statement was conveyed via their Telegram channel. ISIS claims to have detonated an explosive device in a predominantly Christian group.
“Caliphate soldiers detonated an explosive device on a large group of Christians in the city of Marawi,” said an ISIS statement as reported by AFPMonday (4/12/2023).
Four people were reported dead. Local police also recorded that at least 50 people were injured.
One of the witnesses at the location, Chris Jurado (21), said the incident occurred on Saturday (3/12) at around 07.00 local time. The bomb explosion occurred during morning mass.
“It was really sudden and everyone ran,” Jurado said.
Reported Reuters, Sunday (3/12), Regional Police Director, Brigadier General Allan Nobleza, said that his party was conducting an investigation into the explosion. He added that this attack was suspected to be revenge by a pro-ISIS militant group.
The explosion occurred in Marawi. Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr. condemned the attack bom at the University of the Philippines. According to him, educational institutions are places that teach peace.
“I condemn the bombing incident that occurred this morning,” Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr. said in a statement.
“Terrorist attacks on educational institutions must also be condemned because these are places that promote a culture of peace,” he continued.
