Details: The Pentagon, when asked to comment on the news of the attack, said that it “saw information about the attack on the USS Carney and merchant ships and will provide information when it becomes available.”
Before this, reports of drone attacks and explosions in the Red Sea came from the British military.
The Pentagon did not say where, in their opinion, the shelling came from.
Meanwhile, Houthi militants in Yemen said they were involved in the attack and that one of the ships was hit by a missile and another by a drone in the strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. However, the US did not mention the presence of the destroyer. A spokesman for the group said the attacks would continue as Israel continues its war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
A US official, who agreed to comment on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the shelling began at 10 a.m. and lasted about 5 hours. Another anonymous US source said the destroyer shot down at least one attack drone during the attack.
What preceded: Last week rockets hit close to another US warshipwhen he helped an Israeli-linked ship that was attacked.
Since the end of October, the United States has deployed in the Middle East additional missile defense systems.
