IFK Norrköping is looking for a new head coach after firing Glen Riddersholm.
Kim Hellberg, Peter Wettergren and Arnar Gunnlaugsson have been mentioned as current candidates. Last Saturday, Expressen also claimed that Iceland’s assistant national team captain Johannes Karl Gudjonsson is highly relevant for the job.
The 43-year-old is one of the final candidates that Beijing is considering, according to the paper.
In an interview with fotbolti.net, Gudjonsson confirms that he has been in contact with IFK.
– I had an informal conversation with the club’s representatives this week. I think I will be invited to an interview next week. I have had a conversation with Jörundur Áki (Sveinsson, head of football at the Icelandic confederation) and received permission to go and meet Norrköping if it becomes relevant, he tells the site.
– It is a great honor that they contacted me. I think it’s fun, it’s a club I know well. I have been there a few times when Isak was there. Now it remains to be seen what happens.
Isaac, yes. It is the son and former Beijing midfielder Isak Bergmann Johannesson.
Last Saturday, Tuttosvenskan claimed that Beijing has verbally agreed with Arnar Gunnlaugsson, but that the deal could fall apart if he is not allowed to choose his own coaching staff.
Data that the Vikingur coach fights back against.
– It’s just absolute bullshit, some of the worst bullshit I’ve heard in my entire life. And I have heard a lot of that, says Gunnlaugsson fotbolti.net.
However, he confirms that a meeting with IFK Norrköping is planned.
– I think it will be next week. It will be a fun experience and an experience for me about how to behave in such situations in the future.
Gunnlaugsson has been in charge of Vikingur since January 2019 and has led the club to five titles since then.
As for Johannes Karl Gudjonsson, he has been the assistant national team captain in Iceland’s national team since January 2022. His track record includes main responsibility for ÍA Akranes and various coaching roles in HK Kópavogs.
