There is a chance that when translating the controversial book Endgame changes have been made about the British royal family that were not properly reflected in the Dutch translation. This is what chairman Anne Marie Koper of the Authors’ Association says.
The Dutch translator is under fire for a sentence that is not in the British version of the book. Translators sometimes receive a foreign manuscript that is not yet final. According to the Authors’ Union, this may be the origin of the difference between the original and the Dutch translation Endgame lie.
In the Dutch version, titled Final battlethe names of members of the British royal family are mentioned who are said to have made comments about the skin color of Archie, the then unborn son of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.
The authors’ association is in contact with the two Dutch translators of Endgame. “Translators are not used to being in the spotlight. And they usually don’t need it either,” says Koper.
‘Translators never add words, that’s a code of honor’
According to the author of the book Omid Scobie, a “translation error” was made, as a result of which the names ended up in the Dutch translation. Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Dutch Society of Interpreters and Translators (NGTV) also said that it is a “code of honor” for translators to stick to the source text.
“You make a translation of that and you don’t add anything to it yourself. Anyone who does that is a writer and not a translator. That is really a different profession.”
The first edition of Final battle was taken off the market earlier this week. An adapted version is expected in bookstores next Friday.
