Aviation Industry Deterioration in Russia: 5 Plane Breakdowns in 2 Days Amid Sanctions

In the Russian Federation, within two days, five planes of Russian airlines broke down in flight.

In Russia, the state of the aviation industry continues to deteriorate, under pressure from sanctions from the West. News agencies report that yesterday in the Russian Federation, within 2 days, 5 planes of Russian airlines broke down in flight. Experts note a dangerous trend that could sooner or later result in a major plane crash.

Journalists of the publication The Moscow Times note that on Saturday Aeroflot Airbus A321, which was flying to Moscow, requested an emergency emergency landing at Sheremetyevo Airport. The request for an emergency landing was caused by the failure of the left engine, which stalled mid-air.

Also on December 2, at the airport in Tyumen, for a technical reason, a Superjet 100 aircraft of Yamal Airlines, which was flying from Noyabrsk to Ufa, landed at an alternate airfield. There were several dozen passengers on board the liner.

The day before, 3 planes broke down in Russia at once. Aeroflot’s Airbus A321, which was flying from Kaliningrad to Moscow, was forced to make an emergency landing at St. Petersburg airport. The plane’s passengers were transferred to a Boeing 777, after which they were sent to Moscow on another flight.

On the morning of the same day, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that another Aeroflot plane, a Boeing 737, flying from Moscow, made an emergency landing in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The indicator showed a drop in pressure on one of the six wheels of the landing gear.

In Novosibirsk, the autopilot and flaps of an IrAero plane with 78 passengers on board failed after taking off from Tolmachevo airport.

On Saturday, S7 Airlines announced a reduction in its flight program in several directions. On January 15, flights from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod and Chelyabinsk will be cancelled. In addition, the number of flights to Volgograd, Penza, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kaliningrad, etc. will be reduced.

Earlier, Russian journalists managed to find out that S7 Airlines is ready to reduce flights during the fall and winter due to difficulties with servicing the Airbus A320/321 neo. The airline no longer flies about 20% of its fleet, including 13 out of 39 neo.

Sanctions against Russian aviation are causing serious damage to the industry.

Closure of airspace over most countries of the world. This deprived Russian airlines of the opportunity to fly to Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan and other countries, which led to a sharp reduction in passenger traffic. According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, in May 2023, passenger traffic on Russian airlines fell by 60% compared to the same period last year.

Ban on the supply of new aircraft and spare parts. This led to Russian airlines experiencing a shortage of aircraft and spare parts. According to the Aviazapchast association, Russia currently lacks spare parts to service 70% of aircraft. This may lead to a decrease in flight safety.

Increase in airfare. The sanctions led to an increase in prices for fuel and spare parts, which affected the cost of air tickets. According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, in May 2023, the average cost of an air ticket in Russia increased by 20% compared to the same period last year.

According to experts, sanctions could lead to a reduction in the Russian aircraft fleet by 30-40% over the coming years. This could lead to job losses and a decrease in the standard of living of the population.

The Russian authorities are taking measures to reduce the negative impact of sanctions on the aviation industry. In particular, they are developing a program for import substitution of aircraft and spare parts, and are also increasing tariffs on air tickets. However, it will take a lot of time and effort to fully compensate for the damage from sanctions.

Previously, the Russian company Aeroflot, after two attempts, was unable to deliver four hundred tourists from the Russian capital to Antalya.
