The Real Napoleon: A Historical Look at the French Emperor and the Film Adaptation

What do we know about Napoleon Bonaparte, the French world conqueror who lived from 1769 to 1821? The film Napoleon, now showing in Dutch cinemas, shows a number of his fierce battles. But also a lot of scenes that are historically incorrect.

For example, on FilmTotaal we already wrote about a scene in Egypt that was laughed at by history. But who was Napoleon really? And what did he do during his years as Emperor of France?

The real Napoleon
There are many videos about Napoleon on YouTube. They all tell the story about the French Caesar who in 1812 had an empire that consisted of France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and a large area around present-day Poland.

The Timeline – World History Documentaries channel put out a neat documentary The Rise Of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte online. This video has already been viewed 1.7 million times.

The emperor
“He was the man who would define the early 19th century. He has more documented victories than any other battlefield commander in history,” can be read in the video.

“From a relatively modest background he rose to become master of Europe. This is the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. With historians Dr. Michael Rowe, Professor Pamela Pilbeam and Professor David Andress,” continues the introduction of the video.

Napoleon: from the movie
Obviously Ridley Scotts Napoleon as a film not that bad at all. The film with Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon) and Vanessa Kirby (Josephine) shows beautiful battles and in general the film is also a great story about the proud Frenchman.
