A critical pope, American dollars for the climate fund and a call for more nuclear energy: read more about day 3 of the climate conference here

COP Chairman Sultan al-Jaber also spoke again today. He said that 118 countries have already signed a (non-binding) pact to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. The target is also what the EU aims for, as is doubling energy efficiency.

The signatories want to work together to achieve a total capacity of 11,000 gigawatts (compared to 3,400 currently). This concerns wind and solar energy, or hydropower. Many large energy consumers have not yet joined. These include Russia, Saudi Arabia or China. “I need more countries,” Al-Jaber said. “I ask the other countries present at the COP to join us as soon as possible.” If there is sufficient support, the objective can also be included in the final declaration.

In the meantime, NGOs remain critical of Al-Jaber. More renewable energy is good, they say, but the priority is and remains the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
