Tesla Cybertruck: We know the official prices and specs, and it’s an impractical car

Has the new Duster been announced? Tesla couldn’t sit still, so a day later Musk delivered the first Cybertrucks to customers. Series production will begin soon.

On this occasion they also announced the official specifications and prices of this model. Before I go into such details, I just want to say that I find a very good observation from Musk about how this model could bury the Tesla company. I’m not saying it would bury it, but it would definitely cause cashflow problems.

Cybertruck is an impractical car. I don’t think it will sell well in Europe, for example. Cybertruck seems made for the planet Mars or at least for the big cities and rural areas of the USA.

The total length is 5,683 mm, almost 5.7 meters. As an idea, Duster is 4.34 meters, Tesla Model Y is 4.7 meters. Granted, the longest Ford F-150 is similar to the Cybertruck — but that’s one reason the F-150 isn’t officially sold in Europe.

Also as a comparison, the Cybertruck is the same length as a Mercedes Sprinter van, as a friend who has a Sprinter van said.

The Cybertruck is also 2,413mm wide with the mirrors extended. Comparison: Duster is 1.88 meters. I compare it to Duster because it is a popular car, easy to view.

Now think about how you park a Cybertruck that is about half a meter wider than the standard parking space around our countries and 1.5 meters longer than one. It fits in the same style that a van fits in, with half the car on the outside, blocking two parking spaces. It’s the kind of car the size of a Hummer or Ineos and equally out of place in the city.

Europeans are much more practical than that. Romania still has larger and more spacious cities, even if the market is smaller. I can’t imagine Cybertruck on the narrow streets of France, Germany, Austria and other such countries. Many enthusiasts would buy it, but still a niche remains.

As for the look, I like it and I don’t like it. It attracts all eyes. The natural stainless steel bodywork is spectacular (possibly impractical for scratches, but remains to be seen). The Cybertruck looks its best in poses like the ones below, where it looks like a sci-fi vehicle out exploring planet Earth.

Personally I can’t tell how good the visibility is inside. I’d have to get in one to find out. She looks small. On the other hand, the car is huge and there might be no problems.

Cybertruck is spectacular in the way it was conceived. The body is bulletproof. The windows are made of toughened glass, they could also withstand small arms fire. The suspension is pneumatic and can raise the car to 433 mm of ground clearance.

Storage spaces and transport capacity are very large. Despite the weight and large dimensions, Cybertruck can catch a hundred per hour in 2.7 seconds. Tesla showed a clip where a Cybertruck is faster than a Porsche 911 in a drag race, while the truck tows another Porsche 911 on a platform!

These photos are simulated, by the way. Still, impressive.

Here they were inspired by a clip others made a few years ago of a Model X that was faster than a sports car while still towing a sports car behind it, but it’s a funny idea anyway.

The interior is Tesla-ish: minimalist, with ambient lights like the new Model 3, with an 18.5″ screen in front and a 9.4″ one in the back. If the car is 2.2 meters wide without the side mirrors, the interior space is huge, even at the level of Humvees and other military vehicles.

15 speakers and 2 subwoofers, 65 watt USB-C ports and inverters with power outlets complete the features.

There are three levels of equipment:

Cybertruck Cyberbeast: 515 km range, 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, 845 HP, weight 3,104 kg, tow 4,990 kg, all-wheel drive with 3 electric motors. 100,000 dollars.

Cybertruck AWD: 547 km range, 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, weight 2,995 kg, tow 4,990 kg, all-wheel drive with 2 electric motors. 80,000 dollars.

Cybertruck RWD: 402 km range, 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, tows 3,402 kg, rear-wheel drive with an electric motor, available by 2025 (if not canceled by then). 61,000 dollars.

They all charge at 250kW, which surprised me a bit. As far as I know, the new Supercharger v4s put out 350kW and I was expecting the Cybertruck to make the transition to that kind of charging power. Maybe at a future review, we’ll see then.

Tesla also offers an additional battery bank for this model, basically an external powerbank that can be attached to the car. Not many details were given about this “autonomy extender”, in the sense that it is not known if it can be charged as fast, if it is cooled or not and other such details, but the autonomy of the Cyberbeast model increases from 515 at 705 km when installed.

I’m also a little surprised by the 845 HP power of the top model, and it wasn’t specified for the other variants. I thought the Cybertruck would go over 1,000 hp like the Model S and Model X in Plaid trims.

Tesla has one million pre-orders for this model. That’s right, the truck was announced in 2019 and then its release was delayed for about 2-3 years, so I don’t know how many will keep the pre-order, especially after all kinds of rumors and reviews regarding the poor assembly quality. Besides, no one knows how it drives, how nice it is to drive compared to an F-150 Lightning or a Rivian. Even so, however, if 10-20% keep the pre-order, Tesla still has work to do for a long time.
