The head of the clinic of the AIDS Center in Kamchatka, Evgenia Tyapkina, told the Kam 24 news agency how residents of the region can protect themselves from HIV infection in case of accidental infection.
“In a critical post-exposure situation—for example, you treated a casualty who was injured and covered in blood—you have 72 hours. At this time, you need to contact us at the clinic, and you will be prescribed a month-long course of chemoprophylaxis, which will guarantee that you will not become infected with HIV. The same applies to casual unprotected sexual contact,” she said. Evgenia Tyapkina.
According to her, it is believed that in 99.8% of cases during sexual intercourse, a simple condom protects against infection. In general, it is safe to be in the same room with an HIV-infected person and lead a common life. However, personal hygiene items should not be shared with him.
“HIV is transmitted only through blood, seminal fluid, vaginal secretions or breast milk when feeding a child. That is, this can happen during unprotected sexual intercourse, using one syringe among drug addicts, or in a vertical way – during childbirth from an HIV-infected mother to a child. There are no other ways of infection! HIV is very unstable in the external environment – it is deactivated within a few minutes,” added the head of the clinic at the AIDS Center.
Today, December 1, is World AIDS Day. It was established in order to attract public attention to HIV infection and tell people about the opportunities to protect themselves from it.
