Health officials warned some shoppers against buying some types of cantaloupe sold in certain markets, after two people died and 117 people were infected with salmonella due to this fruit.
Since some brands of cantaloupe were first recalled earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration have warned consumers not to eat cantaloupe while increasing the list of stores that sold the recalled product.
To date, this fruit has been linked to the death of two people and the infection of 117 people, 61 of whom required hospitalization to receive treatment in 34 states, according to what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
The CDC warned consumers Thursday that the recall now includes pre-cut cantaloupe sold in major grocery stores.
It also recommended staying away from whole or cut cantaloupes from Malichita or Rudy brands, bearing the number 4050, and the phrase “Product of Mexico/ produit du Mexique” (Product from Mexico). She advised against eating pre-cut or whole cantaloupe if it is not known whether the fruit came from those brands or if the brand is unknown.
She also advised people to wash anything that came into contact with this pulled fruit.
Returning to salmonella, this infection is very common and affects about 1.35 million people and 265,000 hospitalizations in the United States annually, according to the CDC.
Salmonella causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and symptoms begin 6 hours to 6 days after eating foods containing these bacteria.
Anyone can become infected with salmonella, but some groups are more susceptible to severe symptoms, especially the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with a weak immune system.
