Keller was sentenced Friday to six months of house arrest, 360 hours of community service and three years of probation for his role in the storming of Congress on January 6, 2021, reports ABC News.
The prosecution requested a ten-month prison sentence for Keller.
Keller was among the first to be arrested after the Congress storming. Keller, who is now 41 years old, pleaded guilty in court.
Video footage from the storming shows Keller was wearing an American Olympic jacket, which he then threw away, according to prosecutors. He later smashed his mobile phone with a hammer, according to the prosecution.
– Klete Derik Keller once carried the American flag as an Olympic athlete. On January 6, 2021, he threw the flag in the trash, prosecutors said.
The defense attorney explained that Keller threw the jacket away because he was ashamed after leaving Congress and after being recognized by a young boy with his father on a train. The boy asked Keller about his Olympic career and asked to take a picture with him, defense attorney Zachary Deubler said.
In court, Keller made an apology in which he said he understood that he had broken the law and that he took responsibility for it.
– I condemn the violence that was committed that day, he said, and promised “not to repeat the actions of the past”.
Keller participated in the Olympics in 2000, 2004 and 2008. He has taken two golds and three more medals.
