The local fire brigade and police in Strasbourg, France, briefly suspected a meteorite impact a week and a half ago when they arrived at the Renault Clio after a report. The parked red car had a large hole in the roof with a diameter of about 50 centimeters.
After analyzing a piece of debris found in the car, the University of Strasbourg concluded that it was not a meteorite after all. The stone had the wrong composition and no melting crust. Ultimately it turned out to be a piece of sandstone.
The university also investigated whether seismological vibrations had been recorded near the car. These could then be associated with a meteorite entering the atmosphere. But that also turned out not to be the case.

The university researchers emphasize that the chance of a meteorite hitting a car is very small, about one in a hundred billion per year. This has only happened once in history: in 1992 in the United States. According to them, airplane toilets that are emptied occasionally make it more likely that something will fall on a car.
It is not yet known what caused the hole in the car. It may be vandalism.
