After learning that the United States government sanctioned him for corruption, Miguel Martínez, former head of the Government Center, assures that history is not written about lists.
His reaction, published on his social networks, refers to the fact that this Friday the United States included him on the list of those sanctioned with the Magnitsky Law.

“First Guatemala, second Guatemala and third Guatemala. “They will not intimidate me (they will intimidate me), with their heads held high even though the enemies of the country want only the corrupt people they want to be persecuted,” expressed the leader of the ruling party.
The argument of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), of the State Department, to include Martínez on the list, is because of his role in corruption in Guatemala. And he is accused of participating in widespread bribery schemes, including schemes related to government contracts.
However, the young politician, close to President Alejandro Giammattei, downplayed the allegations.
“I am not a public official and I feel proud to have belonged to the best government in history. History has not been written about lists but about brave men and women. “Free, Sovereign and Independent Guatemala”he pointed out.
“Big bribes” from Martínez
However, the United States shows that it is clear about its involvement due to its leading role in the Executive body.
“Martínez sought to take advantage of his privileged position for personal benefit at the expense of the Guatemalan people”said Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson.
According to the United States, in 2021, Miguel Martínez requested “big bribes” to facilitate the purchase of Russian Sputnik V vaccines by the Guatemalan government.
