Israel is planning a war against Hamas that will last a year or more, with the most intensive phase of ground operations continuing into early 2024, the Financial Times reports, citing “several people” with knowledge of the preparations.
Israel’s strategy reportedly envisages an immediate penetration of its forces, which are inside northern Gaza, to the south of the strip.
The goals include the assassination of three top Hamas leaders, Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa, as well as a “decisive” military victory over the group’s 24 battalions. Also, the destruction of the underground tunnel network and the “governance capacity” of Hamas in Gaza.
“It will be a very long war. At the moment we are not even close to the middle of achieving our goals,” a person with knowledge of Israeli war plans told the British newspaper.
