The 23-year-old graphic designer Rakel has a blooming imagination when it comes to her professional future: She wants to be an astronaut, a beer taster, a globetrotter, a forester, but best of all a comic artist; but definitely not mother! However, that’s exactly what happens to her, because she only finds out about her pregnancy when it’s too late for an abortion. Not only is it unclear who the father is; The uninvited guest in her stomach, which she sketched as a skinny fetus with a black mask and named Ninja Baby, comes to life and comments on her emotional chaos without being asked. A refreshing coming-of-age story with a relaxed approach to female sexuality.
The characters in “Ninjababy”, especially the wonderful leading actress Kristine Kujath Thorp, are all convincing. And just when you as a viewer think that this little masterpiece would drift into the typical clichés of an unwanted pregnancy, the film elegantly turns a corner and also provides a surprise at the end.
“Ninjababy” celebrated its premiere at the Berlinale at the beginning of the year; At the Nordic Film Days 2021 he was awarded the Youth Jury Prize. The director worked with the author Inga Sætre of the underlying graphic novel “Fallteknikk”, who implemented the scribbled animations. The comic elements give the film its unique look; the combination of animation and live action ensure a good rhythm.
