– In mid-November, our fish farmers at the location Ørnfjordbotn in Senja observed a significant and threatening influx of pearl Normans, writes Salmar.

According to the farming giant, “some dead fish were recorded”, before the jellyfish attack escalated a few days later.

– The extent of the damage to the fish increased in strength. For fish welfare reasons, Salmar therefore decided to destroy all the fish on the site.

Perlesnormanets were also observed at other locations in central and northern Norway, but to a limited extent.

Salmar writes that jellyfish are one of several risk factors in fish farming, but that it is very rare that they cause damage to the fish.

These are pearl Normans

Colony jellyfish can be up to 30 m long and are a few cm thick. It looks like a string of pearls. Belongs to the cnidaria, and has strong stinging venom that can harm fish. The colony is pelagic and drifts with the ocean currents, and can occur throughout the water column from the surface to a depth of 1,000 meters. The species is widespread in the Pacific Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Previous reports from blooms in 1997 and 2001 indicate that the jellyfish occur in highest concentrations at the far end of the coast.

– The incident will not affect Salmar financially beyond the value of the destroyed fish. Nor will it have an impact on guided slaughter volume. The location had approx. 1.2 million salmon with an average weight of 0.3 kilos, says the salmon farmer.

Worked intensely

The breeder writes that the company has contingency plans that take such incidents into account.

– Our employees worked intensively on a 24-hour basis together with people from an external emergency boat to deal with the acute and regrettable situation that arose due to this unusual and violent invasion of pearl Normans.

After three to four days, the operation was finished, writes Salmar.

48 million dead fish

Mortality at fish farms has received a lot of attention recently.

On Thursday, E24 wrote that the Norwegian Food Safety Authority estimates that 48 million salmon have died in Norwegian food fisheries until the end of October. That is two million more than at the same time last year.

In the whole of last year, 58 million salmon died, corresponding to a mortality rate of 15 per cent. Both the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and the Institute of Marine Research have stated that it is too high.
