Floortje To The End Of The World
The island is a magnet for tourists who often enjoy being entertained by animals. For example, elephants are used to transport people and selfies can be taken with orangutans. Something that the presenter finds incomprehensible, she says excitedly.
“She doesn’t belong here. It makes me sad to see her like this. This brings tears to my eyes,” said Dessing. One of the places she visits is an elephant park where, according to the owners, animals live that were rescued in appalling conditions and are now doing well, but in reality they have to spend the whole day driving tourists around on their backs. And in between they are chained up and stand in the scorching sun. They are also used for the perfect selfie.

“I sat for 45 minutes in amazement. It’s just kind of an amusement park. I feel like everyone is being thrown in the eye. That they come here to do something ‘good’ by having their picture taken with these animals and washing them,” she concludes.
Love and passion
Dessing later travels to Thailand where they treat elephants very differently. In the Thai mountain village of Ban Naklang, near the border with Myanmar, Dessing meets the Northern Irish Kerri. Since 2016, she has been running a small-scale elephant sanctuary here with her husband Sombat.
With a lot of love and passion, they give a number of these giant animals, many of which have been rescued from difficult circumstances, the most dignified and animal-friendly life possible.
