Tragic Death in Slapping Therapy Session at Wiltshire Hotel: Suspect Charged with Manslaughter

The incident happened in October 2016 at a hotel in the village of Seend, Wiltshire, about 90 miles west of London. 71-year-old Danielle Carr-Gomm was there to follow a session of the so-called paida lajin therapy, often called ‘slapping therapy’ by British media. In this form of therapy, the patient is repeatedly beaten. Sometimes the patient hits himself. Flogging the skin would rid the body of toxins.

A boy also died

The woman attended the session because she hoped to get rid of her diabetes, writes The Guardian. The suspect is 60-year-old Hongchi Xiao, a self-proclaimed healer from the US state of California. He has been charged with ‘manslaughter by serious negligence’ and will be arraigned tomorrow.

The man was in Australia, where he… according to Australian media was previously associated with a deceased patient. In that case, he would have advised the parents of a 6-year-old boy, who also had diabetes, to stop administering insulin. That boy died. Xiao was initially convicted of this, but later acquitted on appeal.

Relatives of the victim told British media that the woman had embraced alternative and holistic medicine. The woman is said to have had great difficulty injecting herself with insulin because she was afraid of needles. Her son said: “She had been trying to find alternative methods to control her diabetes for a long time. She was desperately looking for a solution.”

According to the son, his mother always led a very healthy life and was determined to live a long and healthy life. “She felt good about herself, had a good time with her partner, had a nice house, and traveled a lot. She was still full of life.” His mother’s death was therefore ‘an enormous shock’.
