Shane MacGowan, the lead singer of the Irish band The Pogues, has died at the age of 65. He had been struggling with health problems for some time.

MacGowan’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke writes in an extensive message on Instagram that “the love of my life” is no longer there. The two were together for more than 32 years.

The singer has been hospitalized several times in recent years. MacGowan has been in a wheelchair since 2015 after breaking his pelvis. Last summer he struggled with an infection. He had been in hospital ever since. This week he was finally discharged and he seemed to be doing better again.

The Pogues are best known in the Netherlands for their Christmas single Fairytale of New York, which is played on the radio every year around Christmas. The band made the song together with Kirsty MacColl.

MacGowan was kicked out of The Pogues in 1991 because the other members thought he was unreliable and that he partied too much. The singer then founded his own group that was active until the beginning of this century. In 2001, MacGowan rejoined The Pogues. The group toured until 2014, after which the band split.
