Mr. Principal:

The Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games came to an end, exceeding all expectations. The venues were overflowing with spectators, the sporting level was very high, the ceremonies moved everyone, the mascot (Fiu) left a deep mark in the hearts of Chileans and visitors, and the organization demonstrated optimal performance.

Are we about to enter the Olympic stage? The encouraging suggestion from the president of the International Olympic Committee prompts us to consider the possibility of applying as a host. However, the crucial question arises: How to achieve it?

The economic magnitude of the Olympic Games is approximately 20 times greater than that of the Pan American Games. For example, the 2020 Tokyo Games cost US$13.6 billion, almost a seventh of the budget that Congress is discussing for next year.

This context requires us to be realistic. Assuming an expense of such magnitude would only be viable with the support of the business community. Currently, Chile does not have the necessary financial conditions to face the economic magnitude that the Olympic Games entail.

In this sense, reflecting on our capabilities and resources is crucial before embarking on such an ambitious challenge. The journey towards an Olympic Games will require not only enthusiasm, but also a solid financial strategy and committed support from the business sector to achieve the goal without compromising the economic well-being of the country.

As Harold Mayne-Nicholls said: “They left the ball bouncing in the six-yard box for us. We must score the goal.”
