The case of Nizamodeen Hosein and the Murder of Muriel McKay: A Contract, Deportation, and Search for Closure

Nizamodeen Hosein and his brother Arthur Hosein were convicted of the murder of Muriel McKay (55). The brothers kidnapped the victim on a farm in Hertfordshire in eastern England in 1969, and were arrested by the police a few days later.

The men mistook McKay for media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s first wife, Anna Murdoch.

The brothers received life in prison, and were one of the first convictions without the victim’s body being found.

Now Nizamodeen Hosein has signed an extraordinary contract of 50,000 dollars, equivalent to almost 531,800 Norwegian kroner, to tell what happened to McKay’s remains.

The case has been discussed by several British media, including Sky News.

– Want peace of mind

But after signing the extraordinary contract, Hosein suddenly refused the sum of money, before telling where and how the victim died. Hosein claims that McKay died of a heart attack a few days after they kidnapped her for ransom in Christmas 1969.

Hosein was deported in 1990, but has offered the victim’s family to return to the UK, to show where the victim’s remains are buried.

– I don’t want the money, and that’s not my goal. I want peace of mind. Talking about it breaks my heart. I was young, 22 years old, I didn’t feel the pain I feel now, he tells the family’s lawyer, from his home in Trinidad.

Identified after 35 years

– Can seem nice

The victim’s grandson, Mark Dyer, assisted the lawyers in drafting the contract.

– It may seem strange to many that we want to pay Nizam Hosein for the information. But the offer opened the door after many years of his silence, and our grief and frustration, says Dyer.

– It seemed like our last chance to find out what happened to my grandmother. Our lawyer gave him the first $500 and he just shoved it away. In my eyes, that gave him legitimacy.

Currently not found

Despite the police being in communication with Hosein, McKay’s remains have not yet been found.

McKay’s family petitioned the authorities to temporarily lift Hosein’s deportation order.

– I will be able to remember where I buried the body, if I can go back to the farm, says Hosein.
