Napoleon’s death in exile on St. Helena in 1821 presented the world with a mysterious historical event, but his final burial was even more epic. Almost two decades after his death, in 1840, the Prince de Joinville traveled to the island to carry out the Emperor’s wishes. Napoleon’s remains, returned to their homeland, witnessed a grand funeral procession, ending with a magnificent tomb in the Invalides.
December 15, 1840 is the day Paris met its emperor. 80,000 soldiers took part in a stunning funeral procession through the city streets. Napoleon’s remains were solemnly placed in a temporary burial vault in the Invalides, where construction began on a majestic mausoleum worthy of the legendary military leader.
The tomb, completed in 1861, became Napoleon’s final resting place. A red stone sarcophagus in the center of a circular crypt, decorated with statues and paintings of his triumphs, forever preserves the memory of the emperor. His final journey is over, and Paris now stands in eternal gratitude to its great leader.
