Two recent studies show that older adults who use marijuana have a higher risk of heart attack or stroke in hospital compared to those who do not use the drug, and are also more likely to develop heart failure if they are daily users. reports DPA/TCA.
The two studies, which have not yet been published, were presented on Monday at the scientific sessions of the American Heart Association (AHA) in Philadelphia, United States. Both excluded cannabis users who also smoke tobacco in order to focus exclusively on the cardiovascular effects of marijuana use.
The AHA does not recommend the use of tobacco or marijuana because of the potential harmful effects on the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
“The latest research on cannabis use indicates that smoking and inhaling it increases blood concentrations of carboxyhemoglobin (carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas) and tar (partially burned matter), effects similar to inhalation (smoke) of a tobacco cigarette, both of which are associated with heart muscle disease, chest pain, heart rhythm disorders, heart attacks and other serious conditions,” said Professor Robert Page from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, quoted in a statement, informs Agerpres.
The number of people 65 and over who said they smoke marijuana or consume edibles containing cannabis has increased in recent years, even doubling between 2015 and 2018, according to CNN.
One of the studies presented found that a frequent use of marijuana has a negative effect on people with chronic diseases, such as hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes.
Researchers have observed that people who use marijuana have a 20% higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke (stroke) during hospitalization.
Moreover, in the short term, smoking marijuana can lead to hypotension, which can lead to stroke. In the long term, the consumption of marijuana can lead to an increase in blood pressure, with the risk of developing cardiovascular problems.
The second study, sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health, shows that people who use marijuana daily were more likely to develop heart failure – when the heart does not pump oxygenated blood well and efficiently enough to support other organs internal – by comparison with those who declared that they do not smoke.
About 6.2 million US adults have heart failure, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We want to provide the public with high-quality information about marijuana use that can help inform policymakers at the state level, educate patients, and guide health professionals.” said study author Yakubu Bene-Alhasan of Medstar Health Hospital in Baltimore.
