Creative Assembly is returning to strategy games after the cancellation of Hyenas.

Following the cancellation of the shooter Hyenas, Creative Assembly is reportedly returning to the genre they do best.

“Each studio has its own strengths and weaknesses, but the favorable winds of the early COVID-19 period, combined with the strong results of each title, led us to adopt a strategy to accelerate more, even in areas where these studios has not yet attempted to achieve further growth,” said Sega Sammy Holdings President and CEO Haruki Satomi in a recent earnings call.

“But some studios did well and others didn’t, so we decided to focus on the strengths of each studio,” he continued. “To put it simply: Creative Assembly was good at offline games in the RTS genre, but they took on the challenge of developing Hyenas, an online game in the FPS genre.”

It looks like Creative Assembly will be exclusively working on strategy games for the foreseeable future. Creative Assembly, known for their work on the Total War series, also impressed us when they released Alien: Isolation. As we’ve also seen this year with Hi-Fi Rush, it’s good that developers occasionally move away from their strengths to create something refreshing, but for now it looks like everyone’s going to stick to their field , at least as far as Sega is concerned.

Thanks, VGC.
