SPACE — On November 29 1967, Australia’s first satellite was launched into space. The spacecraft is called the Weapons Research Satellite.
The satellite took off from the Woomera Test Range in southern Australia. It weighs nearly 100 pounds, and circles the earth from pole to pole. The mission makes Australia the seventh country to reach space.
Initially, the United States brought 10 Redstone rockets to Australia for a series of test flights. But the US only uses nine of them.
Instead of sending back the last Redstone, the US offered it to Australia. That rocket was then used to launch their satellite.

In recent decades, Australia has launched several more satellites. Australia is also known for its radio astronomy work, which is another valuable contribution to space science. Source: Space.com
