Germany’s domestic intelligence warned on Wednesday that the war between Israel and Hamas is creating new alliances between the country’s anti-Semitic groups and raising the risk of attacks.
“Anti-Semitism and hostility to Israel are the connecting elements between Islamists, German and Turkish left-wing and right-wing extremists and people belonging to extremist Palestinian organizations,” said the agency’s president, Thomas Haldenwang.
“The common concept of Israel as an enemy creates old and new ties between some of these players, which in the future may lead in some cases to stronger cooperation,” he added.
However, the left- and right-wing extremist scenes are internally divided between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian positions, with some right-wing extremists using the current situation to campaign against Muslims and migrants, according to the agency.
Security agencies are facing parallel crises and threat situations that were heightened by the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the fighting that followed, according to Haldenwang.
He spoke of a new quality of Islamist threats to carry out attacks in the West that have emerged recently.
“The danger is real and higher than it has been in a long time,” Haldenwang said.
Security authorities are working “at full speed” to ensure the safety of the Jewish people and Israeli institutions, as well as at major events, he added.
