Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Lebanese Hezbollah group has opened its voice regarding the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel which has been extended again for two days.

A senior Hezbollah politician said he hoped the ceasefire would hold and his Iran-backed group had started paying compensation to people who suffered losses during weeks of Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon.

Following the start of the Hamas-Israel war on October 7, Hezbollah and Israel engaged in the worst hostilities since 2006, with Hezbollah attacking Israeli positions on the border and Israel launching air and artillery strikes.

But cross-border violence has stopped since Hamas – an ally of Hezbollah – and Israel reached a temporary ceasefire on Friday.

“God willing, the ceasefire will continue,” said senior Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah after a meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, reported ReutersWednesday (29/11/2023).

Violence on the Israel-Lebanon border has forced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border to flee their homes.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed around 100 people – 80 of them Hezbollah fighters. Hostilities escalated after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel, sparking conflict that spread across the region.

Citing Hezbollah’s survey of damage from Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Fadlallah said 37 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 11 others burned to the ground. Another 1,500 houses in the southern region were damaged to varying degrees.

Fadlallah said Mikati agreed the government would pay compensation, including destroyed cars and olive groves. This would be separate from the compensation Hezbollah would have to pay, he added.

“It’s true that we in Hezbollah have started paying compensation… but this doesn’t mean the government doesn’t care, in fact it is concerned, and (Mikati) is very responsive,” said Fadlallah.

Hezbollah says it spent more than US$300 million on compensation and reconstruction after the 2006 war, when Israeli airstrikes destroyed much of Beirut’s Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.
