World AIDS Day 2023: Let Communities Lead in Jakarta

Jakarta

World AIDS Day, or World AIDS Day, is celebrated on December 1 every year. At this moment, all people around the world are invited to raise awareness of the dangers of this disease.

Quoted from the Cleveland Clinic page, AIDS is a condition caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, or also known as HIV. The HIV virus can destroy T cells which play a role in supporting the immune system. If these cells are destroyed, the body’s immune system will not be able to fight infections from even minor illnesses.

The HIV virus is generally transmitted through sexual contact, or direct contact with the sufferer’s body fluids, such as saliva or blood. A person can be infected with HIV without showing significant symptoms. Therefore, it is important to carry out regular tests and examinations to determine your physical condition and prevent the risk of being infected with HIV-AIDS.

History of World AIDS Day

Quoted from the NPR page, World AIDS Day was first proclaimed in 1987 by two members of the World Health Organization (WHO), namely James W Bunn and Thomas Netter. They took the proposal to the Director of the Global Program on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS), who then approved and recommended that the celebration be celebrated on December 1, 1988.

December 1 was chosen because it was close to the presidential election in the United States, so it could attract media attention and increase public awareness of the disease.

Initially, World AIDS Day focused on groups of children and adolescents to inform them of the impact of HIV-AIDS transmission on their families. World AIDS Day also aims to raise awareness of vulnerable groups, such as sex workers and drug users, of the risks and dangers of HIV-AIDS.

In 1996, the implementation of World AIDS Day was transferred to UNAIDS, the United Nations (UN) agency that specifically handles HIV-AIDS. UNAIDS then formed the World AIDS Campaign (WAC) in 1997 to increase the scope of AIDS information for the global community. In 2004, WAC officially became an independent institution.

World AIDS Day 2023 theme

This year, World AIDS Day has the theme ‘Let Communities Lead’. This theme means that AIDS can be ended with the help of the community, starting from professionals who provide care and treatment, to activists who launch actions to increase public awareness of their rights to health services.

Communities can be a link between society and public health services. Communities can also build trust, innovate, and carry out a supervisory role in policy implementation and accountability of health service providers.

However, community leadership through communities is hampered by a number of obstacles, such as funding. If these obstacles are removed, the community can be more active in providing support to accelerate the eradication of AIDS throughout the world.
