The new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has said that Washington will soon provide additional aid to both Israel and Ukraine. It marks a reversal in the stance of the Johnson-backed Republican Party, which has until now blocked aid and wanted the two countries separated.
“I think this will be resolved in the coming days. I am convinced that we can do it and we will see it through,” he said.
He added that everyone involved in the issue realizes that it must be resolved urgently and that “very meaningful negotiations” are currently underway among members of Congress.
However, Johnson said the top priority for the US right now is to help Israel, although aid to Ukraine is also on the priority list. “We certainly will not allow Vladimir Putin to march into Europe, and we understand the need to help Ukraine,” Johnson said.
Republicans will continue to insist that the package of money for Ukraine and Israel also include funds to protect the US national border. It is not clear how much the funds will be in total, according to the initial version, they should have been a little over 100 billion dollars in total. According to observers, the amount will now be reduced, but will remain high enough. The deal on money for Ukraine and Israel is likely to unblock the national budget in 2024.
