US Vice President Kamala Harris will go to the climate summit in Dubai instead of President Joe Biden. That starts on Thursday. It was previously announced that Biden would not go, but the reason is unknown.
Harris will join US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and climate envoy John Kerry at the two-week meeting. Harris is expected to address the summit later this week.
It was announced on Sunday that Biden would not attend the summit. According to news agency Reuters the president must divide his time between the conflict in the Middle East and the upcoming elections.
The 81-year-old president’s agenda this week includes a meeting with President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola. He is also at the official lighting of the Christmas tree at the White House.
Many other government leaders are traveling to the climate summit this week. Leaders from almost two hundred countries are expected, just like British King Charles. Pope Francis was also supposed to come, but had to cancel due to health problems.
Dozens of countries want to reach an agreement in Dubai to gradually phase out CO2 emissions from coal, oil and gas.
