Ukrainian media previously reported that Marianna Budanova had been poisoned, but this had not yet been confirmed by the GOeR. Budanova is being treated in hospital for heavy metal poisoning.
It is unclear exactly which metals Budanova was poisoned with. Ukrainian media point out that these are metals that are not found in usual products or military equipment. That is why the intelligence service assumes that it is not an accident, but a targeted action. Some employees of the GOeR also have similar symptoms of poisoning.
Budanova and her husband live in Budanov’s office. It is therefore possible that the target of the poisoning was not his wife, but himself. According to the GOeR, Russia has already tried ten times in vain to liquidate Budanov.
Russia has not yet responded to the allegations. Russia’s poisoning of political opponents has occurred frequently in the past. Known examples include the poisonings of ex-spies Alexander Litvinenko, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
