Macron: France is keen to support Lebanon’s security

Beirut, November 28, 2023 (Xinhua) – French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday affirmed his country’s keenness to support and enhance Lebanon’s stability, security and independence, according to a statement by the Lebanese Council of Ministers.

Macron was quoted as saying in a phone call with Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, “We have supported these goals on an ongoing basis.”

The French President added that he informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on several occasions of France’s concern about the danger of escalation and the expansion of the conflict in Gaza to Lebanon, in reference to the Israeli conflict with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

Macron warned that the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon “will have dire consequences” for the country and its people, adding that “no party may use Lebanese territory in a way that conflicts with the country’s sovereign interests.”

Macron also stressed the urgent need to elect a new president for Lebanon to help the country emerge from its current crisis and avoid security deterioration against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. /end of news/
