Eczema, a breast infection or simply your hormones: your nipples can sometimes be quite sensitive or even painful. But did you know that there are many more causes for sensitive nipples? We have listed them for you.

If your breasts hurt or are sensitive, this is no fun. But it may also be that the unpleasant feeling is only noticeable in your nipple. In most cases there is nothing serious going on and the pain will disappear on its own. However, if you are concerned, always contact your doctor.

Below you can read what the possible cause of sensitive nipples could be:

Hormones

Hormones are the culprit for many women’s ailments, including sensitive nipples. The complaints usually occur during your period or around ovulation. If you take the pill you usually have less trouble.

Eczema

Is your nipple red and somewhat flaky? Or is it itchy a lot? Then there is a good chance that you suffer from eczema. Other skin conditions such as psoriasis can also cause sensitive or painful nipples. Contact your doctor to find out what you can do about this, because it is not wise to simply apply all kinds of remedies to the delicate nipple skin.

Pregnancy

A lot happens to your body during your pregnancy. One of the signs by which you can recognize a pregnancy is sensitive or painful breasts and nipples.

Breast infection

Even after giving birth, when you are breastfeeding, your nipples can hurt quite a bit. Make sure you latch your baby on correctly – a lactation consultant can help you with this.

Do you continue to suffer from it during the maternity period? You may then have a breast infection. You usually suffer from painful swelling and red, warm skin around the nipple. In that case, visit your doctor.

Irritation

Your bra isn’t doing any harm, but there’s a chance it’s the cause of your sore nipples. Make sure it is not too tight and that it does not cause friction. If you are prone to skin problems, make sure you wear cotton underwear.

Other complaints

Sore nipples do not immediately indicate breast cancer or other breast conditions. But if you are concerned, it is wise to contact your doctor.
