Scientists estimate that there is a mysterious layer called ‘E-prime’ which is thought to originate from water on the surface leaking into the outer core of the earth. Scientists also predict that the water produces crystals as a result of metal heart reactions.
Launching from the site Live ScienceIn the 1990s, geologists discovered that there was a thin layer surrounding the Earth’s outer core in the form of a sea of liquid metal that swirled around the solid inner core.
This layer, dubbed the E-prime layer or E’ layer, is more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) thick and is about 1,800 miles (2,900 km) below the Earth’s surface.

Created by leaking water
In a new study, published November 13 in the journal Nature Geoscience, researchers found that the E’ layer was likely created by water leaking from the Earth’s surface through sinking tectonic plates, then reacting with the metallic surface of the outer core.
If the new findings are correct, it means that the E’ layer has produced large amounts of silica crystals as a byproduct of this reaction, which are incorporated into the Earth’s mantle.
