The leader of the Belarusian opposition and the head of the Joint Transitional Cabinet Svyatlana Cihanouska called today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia (MA) to support Belarusian civic activists abroad who have left the country due to the repressions of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

As LETA agency was informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a meeting of the directors of foreign ministries of like-minded partner countries responsible for the issues of Russia and Eastern Europe was held in the ministry today, where the Belarusian opposition leader addressed those present.
Addressing the current situation in Belarus, Cihanouska thanked for the support given to the Belarusian democratic movement. The Belarusian opposition leader particularly emphasized the need to strengthen Belarusian national culture and language against Russification.

The participants of the meeting discussed the hybrid threats created by Russia and Belarus on the external border of the European Union (EU), especially using migration as a tool of influence. The view of the representatives of the countries on the domestic political development of Russia was pessimistic, taking into account the actual transition of Russia to a wartime economy.
The partners agreed that sanctions should be continued, but at the same time, efforts should be made to work more informatively both with the Russian diaspora abroad and, as far as possible, with people in Russia itself, demonstrating democratic alternatives to the so-called “Russian world”.
In the discussions, significant attention was paid to the trends of Russian aggression against Ukraine and mitigating its consequences, as well as the development of the situation in Russia, Belarus, the South Caucasus and Central Asia regions. The meeting participants discussed plans for closer coordination to maintain the level of support for Ukraine in the long term and to encourage further pressure on Russia.
The directors responsible for Russian and Eastern European issues of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Finland and Sweden took part in the meeting.
