He Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE) added this Tuesday 4,381 new words, according to the update presented this Monday by the director of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), Santiago Muñoz Machado. The main novelty this year is the incorporation, for the first time in the almost 300 years of history of the academic dictionary, of the consultation of synonyms and antonyms.

As part of the 2023 updatethe notable novelty of the DLE is the inclusion of the main synonyms and antonyms, since, according to the RAE, “a total of 42,882 articles in the dictionary contain synonyms or related ones, and 9,790 articles contain antonyms or opposites in some of their meanings” .

For this reason, he clarified that from all these articles, a sum of 260,188 synonyms and 20,091 antonyms.

“This new information is shown in the dictionary in two ways: linked to specific meanings, and in block form, at the end of the article. In its annual update, the Dictionary of the Spanish Language not only includes new terms, but also incorporates new meanings to words that were already collected and new meanings were added.
