Anders Blomquist’s Advice to Frida Karlsson and Implications of COVID-19 for Elite Skiers

Hear SVT’s expert Anders Blomquist about his advice to Frida Karlsson in the clip above.

With three national team skiers ruled out due to positive covid tests: William Poromaa, Jonna Sundling and Linn Svahn, a door is left open for World Cup leader Frida Karlsson to come to the start of Saturday’s 10 km free because she has no symptoms.

– It is possible that you can take a chance if she doesn’t get any symptoms, but my experience is that if you have a cold virus in your body, you have to be very careful as an elite athlete. It often costs more than you can get out of it and it can cause long-term problems. I think she should rest, says Blomquist about Karlsson.

“It’s even worse”

William Poromaa fought against the clock to be able to drive Ruka’s World Cup premiere with inhibiting back pain where it was suspected that it could be a crack in a rib after a fall in Gällivare.

He did both the sprint on Friday and the 10km classic on Saturday and 15 of the 20km in the freestyle mass start on Sunday but didn’t recognize his body and broke. A couple of hours later, he showed a positive covid test.

– It’s even worse and that he competes with corona in his body is not good, now he didn’t know about it so he had no choice, and extremely unfortunate. The good thing is that he can cure ribs and a cold at the same time. The important thing now is not to incur any long-term problems due to the corona, which can sit for a very long time. He really has to rest it there, says Blomquist.
