So the revolution becomes a fact. PlusLiga will no longer be a 16-team league. During the General Meeting of Shareholders, it was decided that in the years 2025-2028 there will be 14 teams in the highest league in Poland. This means that the season after the Olympic Games in Paris will be the last in its current form. – This decision had to be made – said Adam Gorol, president of Jastrzębski Węgiel.
Since the 21/22 season, PlusLiga has been operating in a 16-team format. Previously, from the 18/19 season, we had a league with 14 teams. In recent months, the topic of returning to the previous format has emerged, mainly supported by the top PlusLiga teams that also compete in Europe. – We should build the gameplay system in such a way as to minimize randomness as much as possible. Unfortunately, this season is built in such a way that luck can play a very important role at this most important moment – said Piotr Maciąg, president of Asseco Resovia, to Sport.pl. Now we know the authorities’ decision.

PlusLiga returns to the old format. Motion passed. “A decision had to be made”
On November 28, the officially announced revolution became a fact. During the General Meeting, the shareholders of the Polish Volleyball League decided in a secret vote that there will be 14 teams in the PlusLiga from the 25/26 season. This means that as many as three teams will be relegated to a lower class in the post-Olympic season. Thus, the pressure caused by the media, but also by the players (including Aleksander Śliwka, Marcin Janusz and Łukasz Kaczmarek) brought the expected effect. It is worth adding that the second option in the vote was to change the league playing system.
– There is less and less time for real playing, we play on a weekend-Wednesday basis and late playing hours, all this meant that we had to make a decision and I am glad that it was made. This decision had to be made – said Adam Gorol, president of Jastrzębski Węgiel (quote from: Volleyball Zone ). – I would like to thank you very much for this decision. The whole world is looking for strong leagues, not so extensive, so that those players who are heavily burdened have time to rest and mentally regenerate – adds Sebastian Świderski, president of the Polish Volleyball Association (quote from: Sara Kalisz ).
Will this be the target format of PlusLiga games? Artur Szalpuk, the host of Projekt Warszawa, believes that the best solution would be a 12-team league. – I think there is potential for this and the calendar would be a little less intense then. I am also in favor of maintaining the regular phase and play-offs played until three wins from the quarter-finals. I think it’s important for it to be like this every year, without messing around and changing it from time to time – Szalpuk explained to Sport.pl.
Previously, the situation of PlusLiga in this respect was hampered by the actions of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). – It’s not about reducing, but rather adapting the competition format to the calendar for 2025-2028, which is imposed on us by the FIVB. This applies to all leagues. The period in which we can hold games is limited – said Artur Popko, president of PLS, in an interview for Interia before the vote.
