Ammon – The first Egypt Risk Reduction Summit, which was held under the slogan: “Empowering Effective Change,” concluded that alternative products may reduce health risks, including possible cancers, which are associated with the consumption of traditional cigarettes.
The summit, which brought together stakeholders and experts in various relevant sectors, discussed several issues related to the concept of risk reduction and the importance of adopting it at the health level, in addition to discussing the experiences of many countries that have adopted it.
Regarding the concept of risk reduction, an oncology expert and consultant in Britain, and one of the founders of the London Oncology Clinic, Dr. Peter Harper, spoke, saying that this concept is not new at the health level, but its adoption was not up to the required level, neither in terms of its applications nor in terms of The scope of these applications, especially in relation to tobacco control.
Dr. Haber explained during his speech that the traditional anti-smoking assistance clinics that have been spread around the world for a long time have not succeeded in recording any clear and significant differences in reducing the number of smokers and making differences in public health over the years, as they have only provided indicative cessation plans for immediate cessation, or Nicotine replacement has not been satisfactory or satisfactory for adult smokers.

Harper stressed the necessity of switching to innovative policies in reducing harm to health, as long as the traditional policy was not useful. He provided many examples in which this policy had a role in reducing many of the negative effects of wrong health habits, such as allowing the consumption of sugar substitutes to reduce the risks. Consumption of sugary foods, using safety bags in cars to reduce the risk of collisions, and using sunscreen products, which may reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Haber called for emulating these experiences in combating smoking, as alternatives that may be the gateway to smokers’ final cessation of tobacco consumption are available and scientifically proven, and they can, at the very least, be less harmful if one desires to continue.

Harper added that continuing traditional smoking increases the economic and social burdens, in addition to increasing health challenges that increase as smokers age, causing an increase in the chances of contracting tumor diseases, in exchange for controlling them in societies that have provided scientifically proven innovative alternatives, in addition to significantly reducing the percentage of smokers. Although the best option remains to completely stop smoking and any of its forms.

Experience has shown that Britain has reduced the percentage of smokers by a third over the past ten years, thanks to facilitating access to scientifically proven alternative products, without neglecting to regulate its market and associated policies, in addition to enhancing awareness of the burdens associated with traditional smoking, and correcting misconceptions and perceptions about the relative harm of these alternatives without Neglecting to provide scientific evidence and studies supported by a wide range of experts in the public health sectors and stakeholders.
