Israeli-Hamas Armistice Extended in Gaza, but Violence Erupts in West Bank

Jakarta

Armistice between Israel with Hamas in Gaza has been extended for two days. However in West BankIsraeli forces raided a number of areas and detained many people.

According to media reports Al Arabiya, Tuesday (28/11/2023), hundreds of Palestinian youths were arrested in the West Bank in the early hours of Tuesday local time. Al Arabiya reported that Israeli troops stormed the towns of Beitunia and Kafr Ain, west of Ramallah, and shot two young men. According to Al Arabiya’s report, both of them died not long after due to the gunshot wounds they suffered.

Israel has detained more than 3,200 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 7, the Commission on the Affairs of Palestinian Prisoners and Former Prisoners said.

The majority of those arrested were taken from their homes or at Israeli checkpoints, Al Arabiya said in its report.

Meanwhile, outside Israel’s Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank, Israeli troops fired tear gas at dozens of Palestinians who had gathered to await the release of dozens of women and children.

A total of 33 Palestinians, consisting of 30 children and three women, were released from Ofer prison and a detention center in Jerusalem, in exchange for the release of hostages kidnapped by Hamas in an attack on Israel on October 7.

Violence against Palestinians in the West Bank carried out by Israeli troops and settlers increased after the Hamas attacks.

The escalation in violence in the region comes after more than a year of increasing raids and arrests by Israeli forces in the West Bank. Before Hamas’ attacks on Israel, 2023 was already the deadliest year for citizens Palestine in the West Bank in more than two decades.
