President Volodymyr Zelensky praised his Ukrainian troops on Sunday for the continued fight against the Russian army despite being hampered by the extreme winter conditions. As a result of the severe winter weather, approximately four hundred villages in ten regions are without power.
In his late-night video address, Zelensky said tough, intense fighting is underway in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Kharkiv, while other areas, from Kyiv in the north to Odesa in the south, are experiencing very cold weather conditions.
Nearly half a million people are also without power on the Crimean peninsula, which has been annexed by Russia since 2014, said Oleg Kryuchkov, a senior official in Moscow. Residents have to contend with strong winds, flooded houses and snow-covered roads. Schools and companies will therefore remain closed on Monday as a precaution.
Mayor Henadii Truchanov of Odesa also called on residents to stay at home. Local authorities warned that the water supply is suffering from power outages that are causing the pumps to stop working. He urged residents to have sufficient supplies at home.
