Maddy Cusack was one of Sheffield United’s most prominent players at the club who now find themselves mid-table in the Women’s Championship – the second-highest level.
Cusack became the first player to reach 100 caps for the women’s team, but in September she was found dead aged 27.
Police have stated that there was nothing suspicious about the death.
The family have now published a speech given by her mother Deborah in October, via Maddy Cusack’s foundation. There, the mother stated, among other things:
– What you must understand is . . . the saddest and most heartbreaking reason why I have to stand here and speak to you today is because of football. From February of this year, the loose glow, the one who could be called Maddy, the one we had protected so fiercely, was gradually destroyed and she was taken from me.

“Sheffield United has agreed to her family’s request for a thorough, external investigation to be carried out into the events her family believe may have contributed greatly to her passing away aged just 27,” the foundation’s statement said.
Maddy Cusack also worked in the club’s marketing department. She joined Sheffield United in 2019.
“Those who knew Maddy well know that she had no long-term mental health problems. There would have been no shame if she had, but there was no such thing,” the statement says. The family wants to find out what happened and why she changed this year.
– Christmas last year can be described as her happiest. Everything gradually changed from February this year.
BBC writes that they have tried to get a comment from Sheffield United.
A medical examination was opened last month. The conclusion is not yet clear.
