The escape of a mayor hours before the pronouncement of a conviction for corruption caused a wave of resignations in the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Romania.

The chief inspector of the border police, Viktor-Stefan Ivashku, was dismissed from his position. The district police inspector of Maramureş (a district in the northern part of Romania) and the head of the Main Directorate of Internal Security of Maramureş were also dismissed.

Baia Mare Mayor Katalin Kerekes fled across the Romanian-Hungarian border on Friday, showing the passport of a relative with whom they have a physical resemblance.

According to “Digi24” information, he is currently in Italy with his mother and his wife, and the European arrest warrant has not yet been executed.
