Before discussing the characteristics of the eight planets in the solar system, it is necessary to know that the existing planets are grouped into two, namely the outer and inner planets. The difference between these two groups of planets lies in the distance between the planets and the sun.
Inner Planet
The inner planet group is filled with Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. This is because these planets are closer to the sun than other planets.
Inner Planet Features:
1. Having one or two satellites and sometimes having none at all.
2. The inner planets are made of rock and metal and do not have rings.
3. The size and mass of the inner planets are much smaller than the outer planets.
4. The distance of the inner planet is less than 250 million km from the sun.
5. The revolution period is shorter and the rotation period is slower.
Outer Planets
The outer planet group is filled with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune which are very far from the sun compared to the inner planet group.
Features of Outer Planets:
1. Has many satellites, even more than 10.
2. The outer planets are made of hydrogen and helium, and have rings.
3. The size and mass of the outer planets are much larger than the inner planets.
4. The distance of the outer planets is more than 750 million km from the sun.
5. Longer revolution period and faster rotation period.
