The 28-year-old man suspected of arson in Amsterdam container homes last November has been acquitted. According to the court, it has not been proven that he started the fire.

The 28-year-old man was accused of arson in the container complex in Riekerhaven. He is said to have deliberately set his mattress on fire.

The Public Prosecution Service demanded a prison sentence of six years against the man. But according to the court, it has not been proven that the man set the fire.

“The cause of the fire can no longer be determined, according to the forensic fire investigator,” the court said. “The man denies that he started the fire and there are no witnesses.”

More than 140 people were left homeless by the fire

On November 13 last year, part of the container complex in the Riekerhaven in Amsterdam caught fire. The fire started in a home on the second floor and quickly spread to other homes.

The fire destroyed more than sixty homes. Nearly eighty houses were declared uninhabitable due to fire damage. Several pets died. More than 140 people became homeless.
