Roma Beats Udinese 3-1 to Surge in Serie A; Inter-Juventus Face Off in Classic Match

Roma, coached by the Portuguese José Mourinho, today completed their ‘assault’ on fifth place in the Italian Football League, beating Udinese 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium in the capital, in a match on the 13th round.

The ‘wolves’ surpass Atalanta and Fiorentina in the table, who lost their games on Saturday, and are three points away from the last place in the Champions League, which is held by Napoli, with 24.

On the provisional podium are Inter Milan (31), Juventus (29) and AC Milan (26), with the first two still going to face each other today, in one of the great classics of Italian football.

The result at the Olympic Games in Rome was poor, such was the dominance of the locals in the match, with rare shots on goal from Udinese.

Gianluca Mancini scored the first goal, in the 20th minute, off a pass from Argentine Paulo Dybala, against an opponent who did nothing significant in the first half.

Udinese returned from the break a little more aggressive, managing to equalize in the 57th minute, through Frenchman Florian Thauvin.

Roma did not lose heart, continued to play very well in attack and reached 2-1 in the 81st minute, with a great goal from Paulo Dybala, after a ‘dream’ assist from Belgian Romelu Lukaku.

With Roma always pressing, there was still time for the 3-1, through an excellent triangulation that culminated in El Shaarawy’s crossed shot.

The Portuguese Rui Patrício was safe in the Roma goal, despite the goal conceded, while João Ferreira, defender of the Benfica team, started for Udinese.

In Empoli, there was a ‘rain of goals’, in Sassuolo’s 4-3 victory, with the victory being secured in the final added time, through a goal from international Domenico Berardi.

Sassuolo rises to 13th in the table, with 15 points, while Empoli is second to last, with 10, just above Verona and Salernitana.

Caputo took Empoli ahead, in the fourth minute, with a penalty, after which Sassuolo took the lead, with goals from Pinamonti (12 minutes) and Matheus Henrique (22).

The pace remained high and Jacopo Fazzini restored the equalizer after 30 minutes.

In the second half, Berardi made it 3-2 for Sassuolo, with a penalty, in the 66th minute, before Matias Vinã ‘betrayed’ the visitors, with an own goal in the 86th minute – but there was still time for Berardi to give his team the victory, at 90+2.

It was also necessary to wait for minutes of added time for Frosinone to beat Genoa 2-1.

At Frosinone, Matías Soulé opened the scoring for the home team, in the 34th minute, and, after four minutes, Ruslan Malinovsky equalized. When a draw seemed certain, Ilario Monterisi secured the three points for the hosts, at 90+4.

Frosinone is well established in the ‘quiet zone’, in 10th, with 18 points, with Genoa a little further behind, following in 15th, with 14.

Cagliari-Monza ended in a 1-1 draw, with the visiting team lining up with Portuguese striker Dany Mota.

Alberto Dossena put Cagliari ahead in the 10th minute, after which Mirko Maric equalized the match in the 61st, just four minutes after entering the game.

In the standings, Monza is ninth, with 18 points, and Cagliari 17th, with 10.
