US President Joe Biden will not attend the climate summit that starts on Thursday in Dubai. Climate envoy John Kerry will be present at COP28. It is not known why Biden is not going.
Reuters wrote a month ago that it was unlikely that Biden would travel to the ‘Conference of the Parties’. According to the news agency, Biden must divide his time between the conflict in the Middle East and the upcoming elections.
The 81-year-old president’s schedule this week includes a meeting with President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of the Republic of Angola and the official lighting of the Christmas tree at the White House.
Many other government leaders are traveling to the climate summit this week. Leaders from almost two hundred countries are expected. British King Charles and Pope Francis are also expected. As president, Biden attended the two previous climate conferences.
Dozens of countries want to reach an agreement in Dubai to gradually phase out CO2 emissions from coal, oil and gas.
