‘Our daughter’s daycare wants us to use lice shampoo, but I have not had a good experience with that. At the shelter they don’t actually know exactly. What can they ask of us?’ A parent asked us this question. We don’t like lice, but even less about ambiguity. So we have sifted through the most current guideline for you.
The answer to the question is: childcare is allowed by parents not oblige to use an anti-head lice product. It is a misconception that a lice shampoo alone is enough to get rid of head lice: although the product kills a large proportion of the lice, it is not effective enough against the eggs (nits). And so you still have to comb for 14 days after using the shampoo.
The guideline has been basically the same for a long time, and is divided into two home methods to get rid of head lice:
combing for fourteen days, or: combing for fourteen days in combination with the use of an anti-head lice product
So what can you ask of parents? Firstly, if you notice that a child is suffering from itching on the head, you can find out from the parents whether they have already noticed this. Often the parents themselves suffer from it, so the sooner they are aware of it, the better.
Start immediately
If spread has already taken place because the child has been at daycare, the RIVM advises you to ask the parents concerned to come home. immediately to start treatment.
Like head lice At home is discovered, ask the parents to start treatment before the child comes to daycare.
Contageous
Secondly, check whether other children have complaints, such as itching or red bumps on the neck. If there are indications of multiple cases in a group, it is wise to at asking parents to check their children’s hair (with a fine-toothed comb). This is best done by all at the same time. Head lice are mainly transmitted through direct hair-to-hair contact, so as long as there are live lice or unhatched nits on the head, a person may remain contagious.
Keeping children out of daycare is according to the guideline not necessary.
Bottle of conditioner
So, whether you opt for a ‘quick start’ with a head lice remedy, or at all Natural continues combing with a large bottle of conditioner: Comb for 14 days with a suitable lice comb is necessary anyway. Tip from a seasoned editor: preferably a slightly more expensive stainless steel comb, because it can be boiled out after each treatment (and will last for years). An old white muslin cloth works well to wipe the comb.
Some parents choose a special lice clinic to have the lice treated with warm air. This is the third method listed as an option in the guideline, but it is not suitable for smaller children. Moreover, it has quite a price tag: the cheapest treatment can easily cost you more than a hundred euros. And then we just hope that the lice stay away, because if fellow family members continue to walk around with them unnoticed, you will soon have a new infestation.
And for those who now feel itchy everywhere, a reassuring thought: lice are possible not jump, run alone!
