Jakarta –
An epidemiologist from Australia’s Griffith University, Dicky Budiman, assesses that it is very likely that the emergence of one case of Mpox ‘monkeypox’ death is a sign that the number of patients in Indonesia is much higher than reported. As previously reported, one Mpox case was reported to have died on Thursday morning (23/11/2023) with a history of severe comorbidities, experiencing complications in the lungs.
“Yes, just one death case is a strong indication that the cases of infection occurring in this risk group, this key population, are already over a thousand. Because the case fatality rate of Mpox for clade 2, which currently dominates in the world and also in Indonesia, tends to below 1 percent, even close to 0.1 percent,” he predicted, when contacted detikcom Monday (27/11).
Because the death rate is relatively low, reports of fatal cases are more likely to be reported when the number of patients is too large. According to Dicky, many cases are not identified amidst the difficulty of getting at-risk populations to open up.
If it is not found, the potential for transmission or contagion will continue to spread. In fact, it will not only spread among key populations such as male sex men (MSM), to bisexuals, but will begin to be found in the general population.
Moreover, when Mpox infections began to be recorded in groups of children who were at high risk of experiencing severe symptoms that could lead to death.
“This means, we cannot play around with cases like this, just because they are now developing in key populations,” he said.
“The potential to cause death in groups of children is very high, including those in the key group, if this concerns people with comorbidities, especially immune systems, for example HIV-AIDS, of course very poor immunity problems have the potential to be fatal,” he said.
The government was advised by Dicky to continue carrying out massive tracing and vaccination by involving non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that actively contact key populations. Patient isolation also needs to be carried out in a disciplined manner.
“We need to make efforts for stakeholders to involve, or reach out to, the outbreak, these key populations by involving groups that have been active in reaching out to them, on the other hand also reducing stigma, so that it does not hinder or hinder access to information
“This also includes increasing the willingness and openness of key groups themselves to access health services,” he concluded.
Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Health reported additional cases of Mpox ‘monkeypox’. As of Saturday (25/11/2023) the total number of patients had reached 59 people, which was getting closer to 60 cases. There were two new cases identified in DKI Jakarta to Bogor Regency. So far outside the province of DKI Jakarta, West Java has recorded the most cases of Mpox.
