LONDON: Around 50,000 people took part in a rally in London on Sunday to protest the rise in hate crimes against Jews following the Israel-Hamas conflict. The protesters came with placards reading ‘With British Jews, No Tolerance for Anti-Semitism’.
Some arrived with pictures of Israelis held hostage by Hamas. Some of the protesters chanted slogans in Hebrew, while others shouted, “Bring them home,” referring to the hostages. “I’m here to support my Jewish community.” “I think we have to stand up for ourselves. If we don’t stand up for ourselves, who will stand up for us?” said student Avraham El Hay. Between October 1 and November 1 last year, London’s Metropolitan Police received 554 complaints of anti-Jewish hate crimes. It was 44 a year ago. Reports of Islamophobic crimes nearly tripled to 220 over the same period.
“I want this march to make people understand that racism has no place in this country. We are all equal. What is happening to Jews is completely unacceptable,” said Kate Worth, a travel agent. Police also arrested a man accused of making anti-Semitic remarks. The march on Sunday followed the latest demonstration, with police reporting that 45,000 people turned out for Saturday’s demonstration, while 50,000 people took part in Sunday’s protest.
